free download The Oregon Trail for iphone

The Oregon Trail remains one of the greatest -- if not the greatest -- examples of edutainment software. The classroom classic sent you westward toward the paradise of the Willamette Valley with a wagon full of supplies and a pocketful of luck. Gameloft's new iPhone edition of the game, greatly expanded from its successful mobile update, is a smart remake of the original MECC game. You must still push west, worrying about wagon repairs and disease as you mosey, but the experience has been bolstered with brand-new minigames and exceptional graphics.

When you begin the game, you must make a series of choices that affect your journey. You choose the month of your departure, the kind of wagon you wish to use, and the former career of "pa," the leader of your party. Choosing a banker, for example, means you start out with more money. The carpenter, on the other hand, is better suited at keeping the wagon in tip-top shape. Once you're all set, you start out across the country, using giant virtual buttons to control the speed of your party and access the options menu,

After you set out, you are regularly assisted by the granite-jawed wagon master. This helpful fella pops on the screen and tells you about special events, minigames, and the potential hazards that await you on the trail. He's somewhat of a rolling tutorial. He's also mildly unnecessary after just a few minutes because the game is pretty easy on normal mode, which is the default selection when you first download the game. I always operated under the assumption that reaching Oregon was an arduous, grueling journey. Gameloft's wagon train poses nowhere near the challenge as the original. You must unlock hard mode by beating the game once to really have the screws put to you out on the trail.
